In Georgia, landscape contractors may operate under a Residential Basic, Residential Light Commercial, or Commercial General Contractor license issued by the State Licensing Board for Residential and Commercial General Contractors. Before hiring, verify your contractor's license status through the Georgia Secretary of State's online portal (GOALS) at https://verify.sos.ga.gov/verification/. You can search by the contractor's name or license number to confirm they are properly licensed to perform the work you need.

When obtaining bids from landscapers, ask whether they hold a current Residential or General Contractor license and request the license number. If a contractor claims to hold a license, look them up yourself in the GOALS system before signing any contract. This protects you in case a problem arises—you can file a complaint with Georgia's Licensing Division if needed.

Landscape projects vary in scope, from design and installation to long-term maintenance. Discuss with your contractor whether your project requires a permit and what building codes or homeowners-association rules may apply to things like drainage, grading, or hardscaping. A licensed contractor should be familiar with local requirements and can guide you through the process.
