Georgia requires general contractors and residential contractors to hold an active license issued by the State Licensing Board for Residential and Commercial General Contractors. License types include Residential Basic, Residential Light Commercial, and Commercial General Contractor licenses, each with its own requirements. Before hiring, verify the contractor's license through the Georgia Secretary of State's online portal.

You can look up any Georgia general contractor's license status for free using the GOALS verification system at https://verify.sos.ga.gov/verification/. Search by the contractor's name or license number to confirm their license is current and in good standing. This step takes minutes and protects you from unlicensed work.

Residential Basic and Residential Light Commercial contractors must complete continuing education to renew their licenses, tracked through CE Broker. If you have a complaint about a contractor's work or conduct, you can file it with the State Licensing Board's Licensing Division. All Georgia contractor licenses expire June 30 each year; renewal windows run through August 15 if you need to check renewal status.
