Georgia's State Licensing Board for Residential and Commercial General Contractors oversees two main license types: Residential Contractors (Basic and Light Commercial) and Commercial General Contractors. Before hiring, verify that your contractor holds the appropriate license for your project scope. You can look up any Georgia professional license—including general and residential contractor licenses—free of charge through the Georgia Secretary of State's GOALS online portal by the contractor's name or license number.

General Contractor licenses in Georgia expire on June 30 each year. If you are checking a license, confirm it is current; contractors have a grace period from July 1 to August 15 to renew. Residential Basic and Residential Light Commercial licensees must complete continuing education tracked through CE Broker to stay current.

When you're ready to hire, ask your contractor which license type they hold and verify it matches your project—residential, light commercial, or full commercial. If a problem arises, Georgia's Licensing Division accepts consumer complaints. Most construction work in Georgia requires a permit; your contractor should be able to discuss permit requirements for your specific project.
