In Georgia, plumbing work must be performed by a licensed Master Plumber or Journeyman Plumber. A Class II Master Plumber has no restrictions on the scope of work; a Class I Master Plumber is limited to single-family dwellings, duplexes, and commercial buildings under 10,000 square feet. You can verify a plumber's license by name or license number through the Georgia Secretary of State's online portal.

When you hire a plumber in Gwinnett County, your contractor will need to obtain a mechanical/electrical/plumbing trade permit from Gwinnett County Planning and Development before work begins. After the permit is issued, inspections are required during construction. Your plumber should handle the permit application and inspection scheduling through the county's online system.

Ask your plumber whether they hold a state license and in what class, and request they provide their license number so you can verify it yourself. Georgia plumbing licenses expire June 30 each year, so a current license is important.
