Hiring an Electrician in Lawrenceville, Georgia
Georgia requires all electrical contractors to hold a license from the Georgia State Board of Electrical Contractors, a division of the Georgia Secretary of State. Contractors must carry either a Restricted License or Non-Restricted License. Before you hire, verify the company's license status using the Secretary of State's online GOALS portal at verify.sos.ga.gov.
If you're planning electrical work in Gwinnett County, check whether a permit is required. Many common replacements—such as switches, light fixtures, and outlets—do not require permits under county ordinances. However, larger work like panel upgrades, new wiring, and generator or EV charger installation typically does. Gwinnett County issues permits and schedules inspections through its ZIP Portal.
When you call an electrician, ask whether the scope of work needs a permit and whether they will handle it. Licensed contractors stay current through continuing education, tracked by CE Broker. If you have a complaint about your contractor's work or licensing, you can file one with the Georgia State Board of Electrical Contractors.
How do I verify an electrician's Georgia license?
Use the Georgia Secretary of State's online verification system at verify.sos.ga.gov. You can search by the contractor's name or license number to confirm they hold a valid Restricted or Non-Restricted License. [1, 2]
Does my electrical project need a permit in Gwinnett County?
Switching out a light fixture, switch, or outlet typically does not require a permit. However, panel upgrades, rewiring, generator installation, EV charger installation, and other major work usually do. Ask your contractor whether a permit applies to your job. [3]
How do I file a complaint if there's an issue with the electrical work?
You can file a complaint with the Georgia State Board of Electrical Contractors Licensing Division through the Secretary of State's office. [1]
How are electrical inspections scheduled in Gwinnett County?
After the permit is issued, inspections are scheduled online through Gwinnett County's ZIP Portal. You will need your permit case number to request an inspection. [3]
