Hiring a Painter in Canton, Georgia
Painting contractors in Georgia are licensed by the State Licensing Board for Residential and Commercial General Contractors. Residential painters may hold a Residential Basic or Residential Light Commercial license, while larger operations may be licensed as General Contractors. Before hiring, verify that your painter holds the appropriate license for your project type.
You can verify a painter's Georgia license online through the Secretary of State's GOALS portal at https://verify.sos.ga.gov/verification/. Search by the contractor's name or license number to confirm their license is current and in good standing. This step protects you by confirming the business is properly registered with the state.
When requesting an estimate, ask whether the painter will handle permitting and whether your project requires a building permit. Some work may fall under local building codes, so clarify responsibility upfront. A professional painter can advise on these requirements and any continuing education standards their license requires.
What license types exist for painters in Georgia?
Georgia's State Licensing Board issues Residential Basic and Residential Light Commercial licenses for residential painters, and General Contractor licenses for larger commercial operations. The license type depends on the scope and structure of the work. [1]
How do I verify a painter's Georgia license?
Use the Georgia Secretary of State's online verification tool at https://verify.sos.ga.gov/verification/. You can search by the contractor's name or license number to confirm the license is current. [2]
When do Georgia painter licenses expire?
Georgia contractor licenses expire on June 30 each year. Renewal is accepted through August 15 in the late renewal period. [1]

Residential Basic and Residential Light Commercial contractors must submit proof of continuing education for renewal, tracked through CE Broker. [1]
