Before hiring a painter in Atlanta, check whether the work requires a contractor license. Georgia's State Licensing Board for Residential and Commercial General Contractors oversees General Contractors and Residential Contractors. If your project falls under a license type, verify the contractor's license through the Georgia Secretary of State's online GOALS portal before signing a contract.

Most painting work in Atlanta requires a building permit from the City of Atlanta Office of Buildings. Permits must comply with the 2024 International Residential Code, 2024 International Building Code, and other adopted state codes. Your painter should handle the permit application or clarify who is responsible.

When you call, ask whether the contractor holds an active Georgia painter or general contractor license, whether permits are required for your project, and who obtains them. If you need to verify a license yourself, use the Georgia Secretary of State's online lookup at verify.sos.ga.gov/verification/.
