Georgia's State Licensing Board oversees residential and commercial general contractors, including painters. Before hiring, check whether your painter holds the appropriate license. Residential Basic and Residential Light Commercial licenses are common for painting work. You can verify any Georgia contractor's license online through the Secretary of State's GOALS portal by the contractor's name or license number.

Once you have chosen a painter, the City of Atlanta's Office of Buildings handles building permits for your project. Most painting work does not require a permit, but exterior work affecting structural elements may. Permits submitted from February 1, 2026 onward must comply with the 2024 International Residential Code and 2024 International Building Code, both with Georgia amendments. The Office of Buildings can clarify whether your project needs a permit: call (404) 330-6150.

Ask your painter for proof of their license and current insurance. Request references and a detailed written estimate that covers prep work, paint specifications, timeline, and cleanup. Verify their license status before signing any contract.
