Painting contractors in Georgia may operate under general or residential contractor licenses issued by the State Licensing Board for Residential and Commercial General Contractors. Before hiring, verify that a contractor holds a valid license using the Georgia Secretary of State's online GOALS portal at verify.sos.ga.gov.

Many painting projects in Atlanta require a building permit from the City of Atlanta Office of Buildings. Starting February 1, 2026, all new permit applications must comply with the 2024 International Residential Code, 2024 International Building Code, and related state codes with Georgia amendments. Ask your painter whether your project needs a permit and who will obtain it.

When you call a painter, ask whether they hold a Residential Basic or Residential Light Commercial license, and request their license number so you can verify it. Confirm that they will handle permitting if required, and understand what the estimate includes—prep work, paint quality, and the number of coats are common points to clarify.
