Hiring a Landscaper in Atlanta, Georgia
Georgia requires landscaping contractors who perform certain work to be licensed. The Georgia State Licensing Board for Residential and Commercial General Contractors oversees Residential Basic and Residential Light Commercial licenses, which are the main categories for landscape and remodeling work. You can verify a contractor's license status using the Georgia Secretary of State's online GOALS portal, which lets you search by business name or license number.
Many landscape projects in Atlanta need permits. The City of Atlanta Office of Buildings issues these permits and enforces the 2024 International Residential Code and other updated state codes for work submitted on or after February 1, 2026. Before hiring, ask whether your planned work requires a permit—your contractor should know and handle the application, or clarify who will.
When you call a landscaper, ask whether they hold a current Georgia contractor license and offer to verify it yourself through GOALS. Also confirm that they understand Atlanta's permit requirements for your specific project.
What license does a landscaper need in Georgia?
