In Georgia, heating and air conditioning contractors must be licensed by the Georgia State Board of Conditioned Air Contractors, one of five divisions under the State Construction Industry Licensing Board. Before hiring, verify that a contractor holds a valid license through the Georgia Secretary of State's online license lookup tool (GOALS portal) by the contractor's name or license number.

When you hire an HVAC contractor in Atlanta for work requiring a permit, the City of Atlanta Office of Buildings issues the permit and enforces the 2024 International Residential Code (IRC), 2024 International Building Code (IBC), 2024 International Mechanical Code (IMC), and related Georgia amendments. The contractor should be familiar with these standards and handle permit coordination; you can also contact the Office of Buildings at (404) 330-6150 with questions.

As you decide, ask any prospective contractor whether they hold a current Georgia license and request the license number so you can confirm it. This step protects you and ensures the work meets state standards.
