In Florida, painters performing work for compensation must be licensed through the Construction Industry Licensing Board under the Department of Business & Professional Regulation. You can verify any painter's license status using the DBPR's online license search at https://www.myfloridalicense.com/wl11.asp by searching by the business name, license number, or contractor name. This free lookup shows whether a license is current and in good standing.

When hiring a painter, ask whether they hold a state license and request the license number so you can confirm it independently. Florida contractors are designated as either certified (license code begins with C, valid statewide) or registered (license code begins with R, valid only in their jurisdiction). Understanding this distinction helps you know whether the contractor can work anywhere in the state or only locally.

Painting work may require permits depending on the scope and location within West Palm Beach. Before signing a contract, clarify with your painter whether permits are needed for your project and who will handle the permitting process.
