In Florida, painting work that involves construction or alteration to real property may require a licensed contractor depending on scope and contract value. The Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB), administered by the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR), regulates construction contractors in the state. Before hiring, verify whether the painter holds the required license for your project.

You can search for a painter's license status on the DBPR website using the license search tool at myfloridalicense.com. You may search by the contractor's name, license number, city, or license type. Florida contractors are designated as either certified (able to work statewide) or registered (limited to specific jurisdictions); the occupation code on their license begins with C or R to show which applies.

When requesting a quote or signing a contract, ask your painter about their licensing status and whether permits will be needed for your project. Local building codes apply to painting work, especially exterior painting and drywall repair, so confirm that the contractor is familiar with Florida's current building code requirements.
