In Florida, painting contractors may require licensing depending on the scope and value of work. Before hiring, verify that your contractor holds the appropriate license by searching the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR) Construction Industry Licensing Board database at myfloridalicense.com. You can search by the contractor's name, license number, or location. This step protects you by confirming the contractor is authorized and in good standing.

When planning a painting project, ask your contractor whether permits are required. While many interior and exterior painting jobs do not require permits, some work—especially larger renovations or commercial projects—may need local approval. Your contractor should advise you on permit requirements specific to your project and location.

Check that any contractor you hire understands Florida's building codes for your region. The Florida Building Code governs construction standards and may affect materials, application methods, and safety requirements depending on your project type and whether your property is near coastal areas.
