Hiring a Landscaper in West Palm Beach, Florida
In Florida, landscape contractors who undertake construction, alteration, or improvement work for compensation must be licensed through the Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB) under the Department of Business and Professional Regulation. The CILB regulates the construction industry and issues two main contractor types: certified contractors, who hold a statewide certificate and may work anywhere in Florida, and registered contractors, who register for specific jurisdictions. You can verify whether a landscaper holds an active license by searching the DBPR online portal by name, license number, or city.
Before hiring a landscaper for major projects—particularly hardscaping, irrigation installation, or structural work—confirm that the contractor holds the appropriate license for the scope of work. Florida's building code applies to landscape-related construction, so projects involving structures, drainage systems, or site modification may require permits and inspection.
When you call a landscaper, ask whether they are a certified or registered contractor and request their license number. You can then look up their license status at the Florida DBPR portal to verify good standing and check for any disciplinary history.
Do landscapers in Florida need to be licensed?
Landscapers who perform construction, alteration, repair, or improvement work for compensation must be licensed as contractors in Florida. The Construction Industry Licensing Board regulates them. However, some routine maintenance work may fall outside licensure requirements—ask your contractor about their licensing if your project involves substantial structural or site work. [1]
How do I check if a landscaper's Florida license is valid?
Use the DBPR Online Services license search portal at myfloridalicense.com. You can search by the contractor's name, license number, or city. The search will show whether their license is current and in good standing. [2]
What is the difference between a certified and registered contractor?
A certified contractor holds a statewide certificate and may work in any Florida jurisdiction. A registered contractor registers with the department for specific jurisdictions only and may contract only in those areas. Both must meet competency requirements. [1]
Will my landscaping project need a permit in West Palm Beach?
Projects that involve construction, alteration, or improvement of structures or site conditions may require permits under the Florida Building Code. Your contractor should advise whether permits apply to your specific work. Contact the City of West Palm Beach Building Department for jurisdiction-specific requirements. [3]
What should I ask a landscaper before hiring?
Ask whether they are licensed, request their license number, and confirm the license is active using the DBPR search. Also ask whether your project will require permits and whether they carry workers' compensation coverage, as contractors are subject to Florida workers' compensation regulations. [1, 2]
Where can I find information about Florida's building code for landscape work?
The Florida Building Code Online portal (floridabuilding.org) provides the official Florida Building Code and resources. You can also contact the Florida Building Code office at 850-487-1824 with questions about code requirements for your project. [3, 4]
