Hiring a Landscaper in West Palm Beach, Florida
In Florida, landscape work that involves construction—such as hardscaping, irrigation installation, or structural improvements—may require a contractor license from the Construction Industry Licensing Board. The board oversees two main types of contractor licenses: certified contractors, who can work anywhere in the state, and registered contractors, who are limited to specific jurisdictions. Before you hire, ask your landscaper whether their scope of work requires a license and, if so, which type they hold.
You can verify whether a contractor is licensed by searching the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR) online licensing portal. A quick search by name or license number will show you their current status and any disciplinary history. This step takes only minutes and gives you confidence that the person you hire meets the state's competency requirements.
Depending on your project, local permits and building-code compliance may apply. The Florida Building Code sets standards for landscape-related construction, especially work involving irrigation, drainage, or structural elements. When you call Santa Fe Services Inc at (561) 801-0402 during their weekday hours (8 AM–5 PM), ask what permits and inspections your specific project will need. This conversation protects both you and the contractor.
Do I need a licensed contractor for landscape work in Florida?
It depends on the scope of work. Landscaping that involves construction—such as hardscaping, irrigation systems, or structural improvements to real estate—typically requires a contractor licensed by Florida's Construction Industry Licensing Board. Routine maintenance like mowing or planting may not. Ask your landscaper to clarify whether your project requires licensure. [1]
How do I check if a Florida landscaper is licensed?
Visit the Florida DBPR online licensing portal and use the licensee search tool. You can search by the contractor's name or license number. The portal will show their current license status and any disciplinary records. [2]
What are certified vs. registered contractor licenses?
A certified contractor holds a statewide certificate and can work anywhere in Florida. A registered contractor has met requirements for a specific jurisdiction and can only work in that area. Both types must pass competency exams, but certified contractors have broader geographic rights. [1]
Will my landscape project need permits in West Palm Beach?
Many landscape construction projects—especially those involving irrigation, drainage, or structural work—require local permits and inspections under the Florida Building Code. The exact requirements depend on your project scope. When you contact Santa Fe Services Inc at (561) 801-0402, ask them to identify which permits apply to your work. [1, 3]
What should I ask a landscaper before hiring?
Ask whether their work requires a Florida contractor license and, if so, request their license number so you can verify it. Also ask which permits and inspections your specific project will need under the Florida Building Code. These questions ensure the contractor is qualified and that your work will meet local standards. [1, 2, 3]
