Florida's Construction Industry Licensing Board regulates landscapers through the Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR). Before hiring, verify that your contractor holds the correct license type for the work you need. Contractors in Florida may be certified (allowed to work statewide) or registered (allowed to work only in specific jurisdictions). You can search any contractor's license status on the DBPR's official license-search portal at myfloridalicense.com by name, license number, city, or county.

Most landscaping work in West Palm Beach requires a building permit from Palm Beach County's Building Division. The county maintains an online permit center and contractor lookup tool; you can apply for permits and track progress at pbcgov.org. Permits ensure that work meets the Florida Building Code and local safety standards. Check with Palm Beach County Building Division before starting any major project—their main office is at 2300 N. Jog Rd., West Palm Beach, open Monday–Friday, 8 AM–5 PM.

When you contact a landscaper, ask whether they hold a current Florida license and in what jurisdiction it applies. Request their license number and verify it yourself using the DBPR search tool. For larger projects, ask whether a permit is required and whether the contractor handles permitting or if you need to apply. Understanding these steps helps ensure your project is done to code and protects both you and the business.
