Hiring an HVAC Contractor in West Palm Beach, Florida
Florida's Construction Industry Licensing Board regulates HVAC contractors. Contractors in Florida are either certified or registered. A certified contractor holds a statewide certificate of competency and may work in any Florida jurisdiction; a registered contractor must meet the competency requirements of each jurisdiction where they work. You can verify a contractor's license status on the Florida Department of Business & Professional Regulation website.
Before hiring, check whether the contractor holds an active Florida license and confirm their license type and scope of work. Ask the contractor whether they carry workers' compensation insurance and request proof of coverage. Since Florida follows the Florida Building Code, any HVAC work in your home must comply with state and local building codes—ask the contractor how they ensure compliance.
How do I check an HVAC contractor's Florida license?
Visit the Florida DBPR license search portal at myfloridalicense.com. You can search by the contractor's name, license number, city, or license type. The search will show whether the license is active and in good standing. [2]
What license types do HVAC contractors have in Florida?
HVAC contractors are either certified (license code beginning with C) or registered (code beginning with R). Certified contractors may work statewide; registered contractors may only work in the jurisdiction where they are registered. [1]
Do HVAC contractors need to pull permits in Florida?
HVAC work in Florida must comply with the Florida Building Code. Local jurisdictions may require permits for HVAC installation and major repairs. Ask your contractor whether a permit is needed for your specific project. [3]
What should I ask an HVAC contractor before hiring?
Ask to see their Florida construction license, confirm their license is active and registered in your jurisdiction, verify they carry workers' compensation insurance, and ask how they ensure the work will meet Florida Building Code requirements. [1, 2, 3]
