Hiring a plumber in Tampa, Florida
Before you call any plumber in Tampa, create a hiring checklist. Florida requires plumbing contractors to be licensed by the Construction Industry Licensing Board under the Department of Business and Professional Regulation. You can verify any plumber's current license status—and check for disciplinary history—using the free license search at myfloridalicense.com.
In Florida, plumbers work under either a certified or registered contractor license. A certified contractor can work anywhere in the state; a registered contractor can work only in the jurisdiction where registered. When you call, ask whether the plumber holds a current license and what type it is. Keep the license number handy so you can look it up yourself.
Most plumbing work in Florida requires a permit and inspection to meet the Florida Building Code. Ask your plumber whether a permit is needed for your job and who will pull it. This protects you: unpermitted work can create problems when you sell your home or file an insurance claim.
How do I check if a plumber is licensed in Florida?
Visit myfloridalicense.com and use the license search tool. You can search by the plumber's name, license number, city, or county. The search shows their current license status and any disciplinary history. [2]
What license types do plumbers in Florida hold?
Plumbers work under either a certified contractor license (can work statewide) or a registered contractor license (valid only in the jurisdiction where registered). Ask which type your plumber holds. [1]
Do I need a permit for residential plumbing work in Tampa?
Most plumbing work requires a permit and inspection under the Florida Building Code. Ask your plumber whether a permit is required for your specific job and confirm who will obtain it. [3]
What should I ask a plumber before hiring?
Ask for their current Florida license number and verify it online. Confirm whether your job requires a permit, who will pull it, and what the scope of work covers. Also ask about their hours and whether they offer emergency service. [1, 2]
