Hiring an HVAC Contractor in Tampa, Florida
Florida's Construction Industry Licensing Board regulates HVAC contractors under a license system. All contractors who undertake work for compensation—whether repair, installation, or remodeling—must hold the appropriate license. You can verify any contractor's current license status through the state's online licensing portal.
Before hiring, ask your contractor for their Florida license number and confirm it is active. The DBPR (Department of Business & Professional Regulation) maintains a searchable database where you can check a contractor's license type and any disciplinary history. This step protects you by ensuring the person working on your home meets state competency requirements.
Building work, including HVAC installation and major modifications, is subject to Florida Building Code requirements. Your contractor should be familiar with these codes and any local permits required for your job. If a major system replacement or new installation is planned, confirm that permits will be obtained and inspections scheduled as required by code.
How do I verify a contractor's Florida license?
Visit the DBPR Online Services website (myfloridalicense.com) and use the license search tool. You can search by the contractor's name or license number. The database shows whether the license is current and active. [1, 2]
What does a Florida HVAC license mean?
A contractor licensed by Florida's Construction Industry Licensing Board has passed competency requirements for their trade. Licensed contractors are held to state standards for safety, workmanship, and conduct. [1]
Are permits required for AC repair and installation in Tampa?

What should I ask a contractor before hiring?
Request their Florida license number and confirm it is active through the DBPR database. Ask whether permits and inspections will be required for your job, and confirm they will comply with Florida Building Code. [1, 2, 3]
