In Florida, HVAC contractors must be licensed by the Construction Industry Licensing Board under the Department of Business & Professional Regulation. There are two license types: certified contractors, who can work statewide without local competency requirements, and registered contractors, who can only work in jurisdictions where they registered. You can verify a contractor's license status and type through the official MyFloridaLicense portal.

Before hiring, ask to see the contractor's current license and verify it on the DBPR website by license number or name. Florida requires contractors to carry workers' compensation insurance, and you can check coverage status through the Workers Compensation Policy Tracking Database. Building and mechanical work may require permits; ask your contractor whether permits apply to your project and who will obtain them.

When evaluating contractors, ask about their experience with high-efficiency systems, whether they are members of professional organizations, and what their warranty and service terms cover. Request references and compare quotes from multiple businesses.
