Hiring an HVAC Contractor in Tampa, Florida

Florida's Construction Industry Licensing Board oversees HVAC and electrical contractors. The state requires contractors to hold a license before they can legally work. You can verify any contractor's license and disciplinary history using the Florida Department of Business & Professional Regulation (DBPR) online license search at myfloridalicense.com. Search by the contractor's name or license number to confirm their status.

When you call an HVAC contractor, ask to see proof of their state license numbers. Florida designates contractors as either certified (license code starting with C) or registered (starting with R). For air conditioning work, look for a CAC (Certified Air Conditioning) license. Electrical work requires an EC (Electrical Contractor) license. Before hiring, also confirm that the contractor is insured and bonded, as these protections matter if something goes wrong.

Most HVAC work in Florida requires permits and inspection under the Florida Building Code. Ask the contractor whether the job needs a permit and who will pull it—this should be part of their bid. Reputable contractors handle permitting as part of their service. If you're uncertain whether your project requires a permit, contact your local building department or ask the contractor during your initial call.

How do I check if an HVAC contractor is licensed in Florida?

Visit the Florida DBPR license search at myfloridalicense.com. You can search by the contractor's name or license number to verify their status and view any disciplinary records. [1, 2]

What license types do HVAC contractors need in Florida?

Do HVAC installations require a permit in Florida?

Most HVAC work in Florida requires a permit and inspection under the Florida Building Code. When you get a quote, ask the contractor whether a permit is needed for your project and who will handle pulling it. [3, 4]
