Construction work in Florida requires licensing through the Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB), part of the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation. Before hiring any general contractor, verify their license status and type using the state's free license search tool at MyFloridaLicense.com. You can search by the contractor's name, license number, or city.

Florida recognizes two main contractor license types: certified and registered. A certified contractor holds a statewide certificate of competency and may contract anywhere in Florida. A registered contractor has met competency requirements for a specific jurisdiction and may contract only in that jurisdiction. Understanding which type your contractor holds helps confirm their eligibility to work in Tampa.

Most construction projects in Florida require permits and must comply with the Florida Building Code. The permitting process and specific code requirements vary by project scope and location. Ask your contractor about permit responsibilities and timelines before work begins.
