In Florida, general contractors must be licensed and regulated by the Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB). The state distinguishes between certified contractors, who can work anywhere in Florida after passing state exams, and registered contractors, who may only work in specific jurisdictions where they've met local competency requirements. Before hiring, verify the contractor's license status and which type of license they hold—this determines where and how broadly they can legally operate.

You can verify a contractor's current license on the Florida Department of Business & Professional Regulation website using their name, license number, or city. This search shows whether the license is active and in good standing. It's essential to confirm licensing before signing any contract or paying a deposit.

Florida projects typically require permits and must comply with the Florida Building Code. Ask your contractor whether they will obtain permits on your behalf and what the permit process timeline looks like. Understanding these requirements upfront helps you plan your project schedule and budget.
