In Florida, general contractors must be licensed under the Construction Industry Licensing Board. The state recognizes two main contractor types: certified contractors, who hold a statewide certificate and can work in any Florida jurisdiction, and registered contractors, who are registered for specific jurisdictions only. You can verify a contractor's license status through the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR) online license search at myfloridalicense.com.

Before hiring, check the contractor's license type and status using the DBPR search portal. You can search by contractor name, license number, city, or license type. This step confirms the contractor is authorized to work in Tampa and current on their licensing.

Florida building codes apply to all construction work in the state. Depending on your project scope—whether it involves structural changes, demolition, additions, or remodels—your contractor should be familiar with applicable code requirements. The Florida Building Code is available online, and contractors should be able to discuss how their work will comply with relevant sections.
