Hiring a General Contractor in Tampa, Florida
Florida's Construction Industry Licensing Board regulates general contractors. Before hiring, verify that your contractor holds the correct license type. Contractors in Florida are either certified (designated with an occupation code beginning with C, allowing work statewide) or registered (designated with an occupation code beginning with R, allowing work only in their registered jurisdiction). You can search for an active license through Florida's online licensing portal at myfloridalicense.com.
Most construction work in Florida requires permits and must comply with the Florida Building Code. Ask your contractor whether permits are required for your project and who will obtain them. A reputable contractor will be familiar with local permitting and code requirements for your area.
How do I verify a contractor's license in Florida?
Use the Florida Department of Business & Professional Regulation's online license search at myfloridasicense.com. You can search by contractor name, license number, city, or license type. This search confirms whether the license is active and current. [1, 2]
What are the two main license types for general contractors in Florida?
Certified contractors (license code begins with C) can work anywhere in Florida. Registered contractors (license code begins with R) can only work in the jurisdictions where they are registered. Ask your contractor which type they hold. [1]
Will my project require a permit?
Most construction work in Florida requires permits and must follow the Florida Building Code. Your contractor should clarify permitting requirements for your specific project during the consultation phase. [3, 4]
What should I ask a contractor before hiring?
Ask whether your project requires permits, who will handle permitting and inspections, whether the work must comply with the Florida Building Code, and verify their license type and status through the state's online search. [1, 2, 3]
