Hiring an HVAC Contractor in Tallahassee, Florida
In Florida, HVAC contractors are regulated by the Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB) under the Department of Business and Professional Regulation. Contractors must hold a current license issued by the state to work legally. You can verify a contractor's license status and check for any disciplinary history through the DBPR's online license search tool at myfloridalicense.com.
Before hiring, ask to see the contractor's current license and verify the license number matches the DBPR records. Florida classifies contractors as either certified (allowed to work statewide) or registered (limited to specific jurisdictions). Check whether your contractor holds the appropriate classification for your area.
HVAC work in Florida must comply with the Florida Building Code. Depending on your project—whether it's a repair, replacement, or new installation—permits and inspections may be required. Ask your contractor whether a permit is needed for your specific job and who will handle the permit application and inspection scheduling.
How do I check if an HVAC contractor's license is current?
Visit the DBPR online license search at myfloridalicense.com, enter the contractor's name or license number, and verify the license is active and in good standing. You can also check for any disciplinary actions. [1, 2]
What does it mean if a contractor is 'certified' versus 'registered' in Florida?
A certified contractor holds a statewide certificate and can work anywhere in Florida. A registered contractor has fulfilled requirements only for a specific jurisdiction and can work only in that area. [1]
Do I need a permit for HVAC work in Tallahassee?
Permits may be required depending on the scope of work—repairs, replacements, and new installations can have different requirements. Ask your contractor whether a permit applies to your job. [3, 4]
What should I ask an HVAC contractor before hiring?
Request proof of a current Florida license, confirm it matches the DBPR records, clarify whether a permit is needed for your project, and ask how the contractor will handle code compliance and inspections. [1, 2, 3]
