In Florida, general contractors are regulated by the Construction Industry Licensing Board under the Department of Business & Professional Regulation. Contractors must be either certified or registered. A certified contractor holds a statewide certificate of competency and may contract anywhere in Florida. A registered contractor has met competency requirements for a specific jurisdiction and may only work in that jurisdiction. Each type is designated by an occupation code—C for certified, R for registered.

Before hiring, verify the contractor's license status through the state's official license search at myfloridalicense.com. You can search by the contractor's name, license number, or city. This confirms their credentials and ensures they are authorized to work in Tallahassee.

All construction work in Florida must comply with the Florida Building Code. Most projects require permits, and the contractor should handle or coordinate permitting as part of their scope. Ask the contractor whether they pull permits, what inspections the project will need, and how they stay current with code requirements.
