Hiring a General Contractor in Tallahassee, Florida
In Florida, general contractors must be licensed through the Construction Industry Licensing Board under the Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR). The board regulates contractors based on their scope of work—the range of construction, repair, alteration, remodeling, addition, demolition, or improvement projects they are qualified to handle. Before hiring, verify that your contractor holds the appropriate license for your project.
You can look up any contractor's license status online through the DBPR's license search portal at myfloridalicense.com. Search by the contractor's name, license number, or city. This search will confirm whether the contractor is currently active and in good standing. Always check this before signing a contract.
Most projects in Tallahassee require building permits and must comply with the Florida Building Code. Your contractor should be familiar with permitting requirements for your jurisdiction and the current building code standards that apply to your work.
What license types do Florida general contractors hold?
Florida issues two main types of contractor licenses: certified contractors, whose code begins with the letter C and who may contract statewide, and registered contractors, whose code begins with R and who may only work in their registered jurisdiction. The license type tells you the scope of work the contractor is qualified to perform. [1]
How do I verify a contractor's license in Florida?
Visit the DBPR license search at myfloridalicense.com. You can search by the contractor's name, license number, or city. The search will show whether the license is active and in good standing. [2]
Do I need a permit for my project in Tallahassee?
Most construction, remodeling, and alteration work requires a permit in Florida. Your contractor should help you understand the permitting requirements for your specific project and jurisdiction. The Florida Building Code governs what work requires permits and how it must be performed. [3]
What should I ask a contractor before hiring?
Ask for their license type and number, verify it through the DBPR search, and confirm they understand the current Florida Building Code requirements and permitting process for your type of work. Discuss the full scope of work they will handle versus what they will subcontract. [1, 2]
