Hiring a General Contractor in Tallahassee, Florida
In Florida, general contractors are regulated by the Construction Industry Licensing Board under the Department of Business & Professional Regulation. Before hiring, verify that a contractor holds the proper license for the scope of work. Florida distinguishes between certified contractors, who can work in any jurisdiction in the state, and registered contractors, who are limited to specific jurisdictions where they have met local competency requirements. Certified licenses are marked with an occupation code beginning with C; registered licenses begin with R.
You can verify a contractor's license status through the DBPR's online license search at myfloridalicense.com. Search by the contractor's name, license number, or city. This search will confirm active licensure and alert you to any disciplinary history.
Florida requires building permits for most construction work, and all projects must comply with the Florida Building Code. When requesting bids, ask your contractor about permit procedures and timeline, and whether they handle code compliance as part of the project scope.
What license type do I need to verify for a general contractor in Florida?
Look for either a certified contractor license (occupation code beginning with C, valid statewide) or a registered contractor license (occupation code beginning with R, valid only in specific jurisdictions). The contractor should be able to provide their license number. [1]
How do I check if a contractor's Florida license is active?
Visit the DBPR's license search portal at myfloridalicense.com and search by the contractor's name, license number, or city. This confirms current licensure status and any disciplinary actions. [2]
Do I need a permit for construction work in Tallahassee?
Most construction, remodeling, and structural work in Florida requires a building permit. Ask your contractor to clarify permit requirements for your specific project and who will handle the permit application process. [3]
What questions should I ask a contractor before hiring?
Ask about their license type and number, whether they handle permits and code compliance, and what Florida Building Code requirements apply to your project scope. Confirm they understand local jurisdiction rules for Tallahassee. [1, 3]
