In Florida, general contractors are regulated by the Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB) under the Department of Business and Professional Regulation. You can verify any contractor's license status before hiring by searching the state's online licensing portal at myfloridalicense.com. This search lets you confirm the contractor is properly licensed and in good standing.

Florida recognizes two main license types for general contractors: certified and registered. A certified contractor holds a statewide certificate and can work anywhere in Florida. A registered contractor has met the competency requirements for a specific jurisdiction and may only contract in that area. When you contact a contractor, ask which type of license they hold.

Most construction work in Florida requires permits and must comply with the Florida Building Code. Before starting a project, confirm with your contractor whether a permit is needed and who will obtain it. Ask the contractor to explain their scope of work clearly and whether they handle all aspects of your project or will bring in subcontractors for certain tasks.
