Florida law requires general contractors to hold a state license from the Construction Industry Licensing Board. The board regulates contractors under two main designations: certified contractors (occupational codes beginning with C) may work anywhere in the state, while registered contractors (codes beginning with R) may work only in the jurisdiction where they are registered. Before signing a contract, verify your contractor's license status through the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation.

You can search for an active license by contractor name, license number, city, or county at the DBPR Online Services portal (myfloridalicense.com). This search confirms whether the contractor you've hired is properly licensed and registered. It also shows any disciplinary history. Always complete this search before making a hiring decision.

Florida follows the Florida Building Code, which governs construction quality and safety standards. Projects typically require permits and inspections. When you meet with a general contractor, ask whether the scope of work will require permits in your area and who will handle obtaining them. A contractor familiar with Tallahassee's local requirements can guide you through this process.
