Florida landscapers who contract for compensation must be licensed through the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR) Construction Industry Licensing Board. The state recognizes two main contractor types: certified contractors, who hold a certificate of competency and may work anywhere in Florida, and registered contractors, who register to meet specific local competency requirements and may only work in the jurisdiction where registered.

Before hiring, verify the contractor's license status using the DBPR's online license search tool at myfloridalicense.com. You can search by contractor name, license number, city, or license type. This confirms the contractor is properly licensed to perform the work you need.

Landscaping work may involve site grading, irrigation installation, or other improvements to real estate. Some projects, particularly those on commercial properties or involving site development, may require local permits or compliance with the Florida Building Code. Ask the contractor whether permits are needed for your project and who will handle the permitting process.
