Hiring a General Contractor in Royal Palm Beach, Florida
Florida's Construction Industry Licensing Board regulates general contractors through the Department of Business and Professional Regulation. Contractors must be either certified or registered; certified contractors can work statewide, while registered contractors are limited to their jurisdiction. A contractor's license begins with C for certified or R for registered.
Before hiring, verify the contractor's license at MyFloridaLicense.com using the license number, name, or city search. This confirms the license is active and in good standing. You can also file a complaint through the same portal if issues arise.
Most remodeling and construction work requires permits and must meet Florida Building Code standards. Ask your contractor whether permits are needed for your project and who will obtain them. Clarify the scope of work and whether they self-perform or use subcontractors, especially for specialized tasks.
What license types do Florida general contractors hold?
General contractors are either certified (license code begins with C) or registered (license code begins with R). Certified contractors can work anywhere in Florida; registered contractors are limited to the jurisdiction where they registered. [1]
How do I verify a contractor's Florida license?
Visit the DBPR's license search portal at MyFloridaLicense.com. You can search by the contractor's name, license number, city, or license type to confirm the license is active. [2]
Do remodeling projects require permits in Florida?
Most construction and remodeling work requires a permit and must comply with Florida Building Code. Ask your contractor upfront whether your project needs a permit and who will handle obtaining it. [3, 4]
What should I ask a contractor about their scope of work?
Clarify what work the contractor will perform directly and what they will subcontract to others. Confirm the full scope of the project and any work that falls outside their license or specialty. [1]
