Hiring a General Contractor in Riviera Beach, Florida
Florida's Construction Industry Licensing Board regulates all general contractors in the state. Before you hire, verify that your contractor holds a current license. General contractors must possess either a certified license (designated by an occupation code starting with C) or a registered license (starting with R). The scope of the contractor's license determines what work they are legally qualified to perform.
You can verify a contractor's license status through the Florida Department of Business & Professional Regulation (DBPR) online license search at https://www.myfloridalicense.com/wl11.asp. Search by the contractor's name or license number to confirm they are active and in good standing. This step protects you by ensuring the person you hire meets state standards.
Ask your contractor about permits, insurance, and which work they will perform directly versus subcontract. Most construction projects in Florida require permits and must comply with the Florida Building Code. Your contractor should be familiar with these requirements and help you understand what applies to your project.
What license types do general contractors in Florida hold?
General contractors hold either a certified license (code beginning with C) or a registered license (code beginning with R). Certified contractors can work anywhere in Florida; registered contractors may only work in the jurisdiction where they registered. [1]
How do I verify a contractor's Florida license?
Visit the DBPR online license search at https://www.myfloridalicense.com/wl11.asp and search by the contractor's name or license number. This confirms their license is active and in good standing. [2]
Do I need a permit for my project?
Most construction work in Florida requires a permit and must meet the Florida Building Code. Ask your contractor whether permits are needed for your specific project scope. [3]
What should I ask a contractor before hiring?
Ask which parts of the work the contractor will perform directly and which they will subcontract. Also confirm they understand the permits and building code requirements that apply to your project. [1, 3]
