Florida's Electrical Contractors' Licensing Board regulates electricians in the state. An electrical contractor (license type EC) is someone who installs, repairs, alters, adds to, or designs electrical wiring, fixtures, appliances, apparatus, raceways, and conduit. Before you hire, verify that your electrician holds a current license and confirm the license type and scope.

You can search for an electrician's license on the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR) online portal. Use the License Search tool by name or license number to verify the contractor's credentials. This protects you by ensuring the person doing the work is authorized to do so.

When you call an electrician, ask whether they will pull the necessary permits for your project. Florida electrical work must comply with the Florida Building Code, the National Electrical Code, NFPA standards, local building codes, and OSHA safety regulations. A reputable contractor will handle permits and code compliance as part of the job, not leave it to you.
