In Florida, painters and contractors are regulated by the Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB) under the Department of Business and Professional Regulation. The board oversees licensing, discipline, and rule-making for the construction industry. When hiring a painter for exterior work or home remodeling, it's important to verify that the contractor holds the proper license for the scope of work you need done.

Florida distinguishes between two main contractor license types: certified contractors and registered contractors. A certified contractor holds a certificate of competency from the state and may work in any jurisdiction without additional local requirements. A registered contractor has registered with the department to fulfill competency requirements for a specific jurisdiction and may contract only in that area. You can verify a contractor's license status through the Florida DBPR online license search portal at https://www.myfloridalicense.com/wl11.asp, where you can search by name, license number, city, or license type.

Before starting any exterior painting or remodeling project, confirm that your contractor is aware of Florida's Building Code requirements, which apply to all construction work in the state. Your contractor should be familiar with any local amendments or code provisions that affect your project. It's always wise to ask your painter directly about their licensing status and to request references from similar projects they've completed.
