Hiring an HVAC Contractor in Pensacola, Florida
In Florida, HVAC contractors must be licensed by the Construction Industry Licensing Board under the Department of Business and Professional Regulation. Before hiring, verify that your contractor holds a valid state license. You can search for an active license through the DBPR's online license search portal at myfloridalicense.com, where you can look up contractors by name, license number, or location. This step protects you and ensures the work meets state standards.
Florida contractors are classified as either certified or registered. A certified contractor holds a statewide certificate and can work anywhere in Florida; a registered contractor is licensed only for specific jurisdictions. Understanding which type you're hiring helps confirm they're qualified for your area. When you call, ask to verify their license status and clarify their scope of work for your specific project.
Any HVAC work in Pensacola must comply with the Florida Building Code. Depending on your project—whether it's repair, replacement, or new installation—your contractor may need to obtain permits and have inspections done. Ask your contractor whether permits apply to your job and what inspections will be required. This ensures the work is done to code and protects your home's safety and resale value.
How do I verify an HVAC contractor's license in Florida?
Use the Florida DBPR license search at myfloridalicense.com. You can search by the contractor's name, license number, or city. The search shows whether the license is active and in good standing. [1, 2]
What is the difference between a certified and registered HVAC contractor in Florida?
A certified contractor holds a statewide certificate and can work in any Florida jurisdiction. A registered contractor is licensed only for the specific jurisdiction where they registered. Ask which type your contractor holds. [1]
Do HVAC projects in Pensacola require permits?
Permit requirements depend on the scope of your project—repair, replacement, or installation. Ask your contractor whether permits are needed for your job and whether they will handle the permitting and inspections. [3, 4]
What questions should I ask an HVAC contractor before hiring?
Ask to verify their Florida license status and type (certified or registered), confirm they can work in your jurisdiction, clarify whether permits and inspections apply to your project, and ask how they ensure compliance with the Florida Building Code. [1, 2, 3]
Does my HVAC contractor need workers' compensation coverage?
Yes. Florida requires contractors to carry workers' compensation insurance. You can verify coverage status through the Florida Department of Financial Services Workers Compensation tracking database, or ask your contractor to show proof of current coverage. [1]
