Hiring a Painter in Oviedo, Florida
Painting work in Florida is regulated by the Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB) under the Department of Business and Professional Regulation. Before hiring a painter, you should verify their license status. Painters may hold either a certified license (designated with a C occupancy code) or a registered license (designated with an R occupancy code). Certified contractors can work in any Florida jurisdiction; registered contractors are limited to the jurisdictions where they registered.
You can search for an active license on the state's online licensing portal at myfloridalicense.com. Look up the painter by name, license number, or license type to confirm they are in good standing. This search is free and open to the public. If you cannot find a valid license, the painter should not be hired for work that requires licensure.
Painting projects in Oviedo are subject to the Florida Building Code. Check with your local city or county building department about permit requirements for your specific project. Ask your painter whether permits are needed and who will obtain them—typically the contractor handles this. Understanding these requirements upfront helps avoid delays and ensures the work meets code.
How do I verify a painter's license in Florida?
Visit myfloridalicense.com and use the license search tool. You can search by the painter's name, license number, or license type. The database shows whether the license is currently active and in good standing. [2]
What types of painter licenses does Florida issue?
Florida issues certified and registered contractor licenses. Certified painters (occupancy code starting with C) can work anywhere in the state. Registered painters (occupancy code starting with R) may only work in the jurisdictions where they registered. [1]
Do painting projects in Oviedo require permits?
Permit requirements depend on the scope and nature of the work. Contact your local city or county building department to determine whether your project needs a permit before work begins. [3, 4]
What should I ask a painter about permits?
Ask whether your project requires a permit under the Florida Building Code, and clarify who will obtain it. Most contractors handle permit acquisition, but you should confirm this in writing before signing a contract. [3, 4]
Where can I file a complaint about a licensed painter?
You can file a complaint through the Florida DBPR website at myfloridalicense.com. The state's Construction Industry Licensing Board investigates complaints and takes disciplinary action when necessary. [1, 2]
