Hiring a Painter in Orlando, Florida
In Florida, painting work that is part of a construction or remodeling project may require a contractor license depending on the scope and value of the work. The Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB) regulates contractors in the state. Contractors are classified as either certified (licensed to work statewide) or registered (licensed to work only in specific jurisdictions). Before hiring a painter for a significant project, ask whether a license is required and verify the contractor's status with the state.
You can check a painter's license status through the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR) online license search at MyFloridaLicense.com. Search by the contractor's name, license number, or city to confirm they are active and in good standing. This search tool also shows the contractor's license type and any public records of disciplinary action.
In Orlando, certain painting projects require a building permit from the City of Orlando's Permits & Inspections office. Interior repainting of residential rooms typically does not require a permit, but exterior painting, cabinet refinishing, drywall repair, and painting associated with structural work often do. Contact the city or ask your painter whether a permit is needed before work begins.
Do I need a licensed contractor for interior house painting?
Interior repainting of existing surfaces generally does not require a state license if it is cosmetic work with no structural changes. However, if the painting is part of a larger remodeling or repair project, a license may be required. Ask your painter and the City of Orlando whether a permit is needed. [1, 5]
How do I verify a painter's Florida license?
Use the Florida DBPR license search tool at MyFloridaLicense.com. Search by the painter's name, license number, or city. The search shows their license type, status, and any public disciplinary records. [2]
What is the difference between a certified and registered contractor in Florida?
A certified contractor holds a statewide license and can work anywhere in Florida. A registered contractor is licensed only for specific jurisdictions. Certified licenses start with the letter C; registered licenses start with R. [1]
Do I need a permit for exterior house painting in Orlando?
Exterior painting associated with repairs or remodeling work may require a permit from the City of Orlando. Contact the city's Permits & Inspections office or ask your painter to determine whether a permit is needed before work begins. [5]
What should I ask a painter before hiring?
Ask whether a state license is required for your project, request their license number, and ask whether a city permit is needed. You can verify their license status on the state DBPR website. [1, 2, 5]
