Hiring a Painter in Orlando, Florida
Before hiring a painter in Orlando, you'll need to understand permit requirements for your project. The City of Orlando's Permits & Inspections division oversees what work requires a permit. Some painting and drywall repair work may fall within exemptions, while other jobs—especially those involving structural changes or large remodeling—will need approval. Check with the city early to avoid delays.
Florida's Construction Industry Licensing Board regulates painting contractors. The state issues two types of licenses: certified contractors, who can work anywhere in Florida, and registered contractors, who are limited to specific jurisdictions. You can verify any contractor's license status and history through the state's license search portal at myfloridalicense.com.
When you call a painter, ask whether they hold a state license and in what category. Also confirm that your project scope matches any permit exemptions, or plan for the timeline and cost of permitting. The City of Orlando's website includes resources to help you figure out what permits your work needs.
Do I need a permit for painting work in Orlando?
Some painting and drywall work may be exempt from permits, while larger remodeling projects typically require one. The City of Orlando's Permits & Inspections office can tell you whether your specific job needs a permit before you hire. Check their website or call to clarify. [5]
How do I check if a Florida painter is licensed?
Visit the Florida Department of Business & Professional Regulation's license search at myfloridalicense.com. You can search by the contractor's name, license number, or city to verify their status and any disciplinary history. [2]
What types of painter licenses does Florida issue?
Florida issues certified licenses (valid statewide) and registered licenses (valid only in the jurisdiction where registered). Ask your painter which type they hold. [1]
What should I ask a painter before hiring?
Ask about their license type and status, whether your project requires a permit, and their timeline for permitting if needed. Confirm that the scope of work matches any exemptions or permitting requirements. [1, 5]
