Hiring a Landscaper in Orlando, Florida
The Florida Construction Industry Licensing Board regulates landscaping contractors. Before hiring, check whether the contractor holds a valid Florida license. Contractors fall into two categories: certified contractors, who can work anywhere in the state, and registered contractors, who may only work in the jurisdictions where they registered. You can verify a contractor's license status through the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation's online license search at myfloridalicense.com.
Certain landscaping work—such as irrigation installation and drainage work—may require permits from the City of Orlando. Ask your contractor whether a permit is needed for your project and who will obtain it. The city has a permits and inspections office to help you figure out what permits apply to your work.
Florida building codes govern landscape-related construction. When discussing your project, ask the contractor how they will comply with local code requirements and whether the work will need inspection. The Florida Building Code Online portal has information and resources if you want to learn more.
How do I verify a landscaper's Florida license?
You can search the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation's license database at myfloridalicense.com. Search by the contractor's name, license number, or city. A valid license shows the contractor is authorized to work in Florida. [2]
What are the two types of landscape contractor licenses in Florida?
Certified contractors hold a state certificate and can work anywhere in Florida. Registered contractors have registered in a specific jurisdiction and may only work there. Check which type of license your contractor holds. [1]
Do I need a permit for landscaping work in Orlando?
It depends on the scope of work. Irrigation installation and drainage projects often require permits. Ask your contractor whether a permit applies to your project and confirm they will handle the permitting process. You can also contact the City of Orlando's permits and inspections office for guidance. [5]
What questions should I ask a landscaper before hiring?
Ask whether they hold a current Florida license (and verify it), whether your project requires any permits, how they ensure the work meets Florida building code requirements, and whether any work will need inspection before completion. [1, 2, 5]
