Hiring a Landscaper in Orlando, Florida
Landscapers in Florida may operate as registered or certified contractors under the state's Construction Industry Licensing Board. Before hiring, verify the contractor's license status through the state's official license search at MyFloridaLicense.com. You can search by the contractor's name, license number, or business location.
Many landscaping projects in Orlando—such as retaining walls, fencing, patios, pools, and outdoor kitchens—require permits from the City of Orlando. Ask your contractor whether permits are needed for your specific project and whether they will handle the permitting process. Check the City of Orlando's Permits & Inspections page to understand what approvals may be required.
When you contact a landscaper, confirm their license type and ask whether they hold all necessary credentials for the work you need. Request references and clarify the scope of the project, timeline, and whether ongoing maintenance services are available.
How do I verify a Florida landscaper's license?
Visit the Florida Department of Business & Professional Regulation's license search at MyFloridaLicense.com. You can search by the contractor's name, license number, or city. The search shows whether the license is active and in good standing. [1, 2]
What types of contractor licenses does Florida issue?
Florida issues registered and certified contractor licenses. A certified contractor can work anywhere in the state; a registered contractor can work only in the jurisdiction where they registered. Both types meet state competency requirements. [1]
Do I need a permit for landscaping work in Orlando?
Many projects—including retaining walls, fencing, patios, outdoor kitchens, and pools—typically require permits. Contact the City of Orlando's Permits & Inspections office or ask your contractor to determine what permits apply to your job. [5]
What should I ask a landscaper before hiring?
Ask about their license type and status, whether permits are required for your project and who will obtain them, references from past work, the project timeline, and what services they offer beyond the initial installation (such as maintenance or seasonal care). [1, 2, 5]
