In Florida, electrical contractors are regulated by the Electrical Contractors' Licensing Board under the Department of Business & Professional Regulation (DBPR). Different license types govern different scopes of work. An electrical contractor (EC) can handle electrical installations, repairs, alterations, and design work across a wide range of systems. A registered electrical contractor (ER) may contract only in specific cities or counties for which they are registered. Before hiring, verify that your contractor holds the appropriate license for your job.

You can search for a contractor's license status on the DBPR's online licensing portal at myfloridalicense.com. Search by the contractor's name, license number, or license type to confirm they are active and in good standing. This is a critical step before signing any contract.

In Orlando, most electrical work requires a permit from the City of Building Development. Your electrician should be familiar with local permitting requirements and handle the permit process. Florida's building code governs electrical installations, so work must comply with current code standards. Ask your contractor whether permits are required for your specific job and confirm they will obtain them if needed.
