Hiring a Landscaper in North Fort Myers, Florida
Florida's Construction Industry Licensing Board regulates landscape contractors through the Department of Business and Professional Regulation. Most landscape work requires a license, and contractors may be either certified (able to work statewide) or registered (limited to specific jurisdictions). Before hiring, verify whether a contractor holds the appropriate license for your project's scope and location.
You can verify a contractor's license status using Florida's free online license search at myfloridalicense.com. Search by the contractor's name or license number to confirm current, active licensing and check the type of license held. This search also allows you to file a complaint if issues arise during or after work.
Landscape projects may require permits depending on scope and location. Ask your contractor whether permits apply to your job and who will handle permit applications and fees. Understanding local requirements upfront prevents delays and ensures work complies with current Florida Building Code standards.
What license types do landscapers need in Florida?
Contractors may be certified (able to contract statewide) or registered (limited to their jurisdiction). The license type appears on the contractor's record in the state database. Verify which type applies to ensure the contractor can legally work on your property. [1]
How do I check if a landscaper is licensed?
Use the free license search at myfloridalicense.com. You can search by the contractor's name or license number to confirm their license is active and current. [2]
Will my landscape project need a permit?
Permit requirements vary by project scope and local jurisdiction. Ask your contractor upfront whether a permit is needed for your specific work and clarify who will obtain and pay for it. [1, 3]
What should I ask a landscaper before hiring?
Ask whether they hold an active state license, what type of license it is, whether your project requires a permit, and who will handle permitting. Request references and a detailed written estimate of scope and cost. [1, 2]
Can a registered contractor work outside their jurisdiction?
No. Registered contractors may only work in the specific jurisdictions for which they registered. Certified contractors, by contrast, can contract anywhere in Florida. Confirm your contractor's license type matches your location. [1]
