Hiring an HVAC Contractor in Miami, Florida
In Florida, HVAC contractors are regulated by the Construction Industry Licensing Board under the Department of Business & Professional Regulation. You can verify that any contractor you hire holds a valid license before you call. Use the DBPR's online license search tool at myfloridalicense.com to look up a contractor by name, license number, or city.
Florida recognizes two types of construction licenses: certified contractors, who can work anywhere in the state, and registered contractors, who are limited to the jurisdiction where they registered. Both types are qualified to perform HVAC work, but a certified contractor offers broader geographic flexibility.
Before hiring an HVAC contractor in Miami-Dade County, ask whether a permit is required for your project. Building permits and inspections protect you and ensure work meets the Florida Building Code. The county's Building Department can clarify permit requirements for your specific job.
How do I check if an HVAC contractor is licensed in Florida?
Visit myfloridalicense.com and use the license search tool. You can search by the contractor's name, license number, or city. This will show you their current license status and any disciplinary history. [1, 2]
What is the difference between a certified and registered HVAC contractor in Florida?
A certified contractor holds a state license and can work anywhere in Florida. A registered contractor is licensed only for specific jurisdictions. Both are qualified, but certified contractors have broader flexibility. [1]
Do I need a permit for HVAC work in Miami-Dade County?
Permit requirements depend on the scope of your project. Contact Miami-Dade County's Building Department to confirm whether your AC repair, replacement, or HVAC installation requires a permit. [5]
What should I ask an HVAC contractor before hiring?
Ask to verify their Florida license status, whether permits are needed for your job, and how their work will comply with the Florida Building Code. Request references and a clear estimate in writing. [1, 3]
