HVAC contractors in Florida are regulated by the Florida Department of Business & Professional Regulation (DBPR) Construction Industry Licensing Board. The board licenses and regulates contractors in the state and enforces discipline. Before you hire any contractor, you should verify they hold a valid license. Florida has two types of contractor licenses: certified contractors, whose occupation code begins with the letter C, can work in any jurisdiction in the state without meeting local competency requirements; registered contractors, whose occupation code begins with the letter R, can only work in the specific jurisdictions for which they are registered. Ask your contractor which type of license they hold.

You can search for a licensed contractor using the DBPR online license search tool at myfloridalicense.com. The search allows you to look up contractors by name, license number, city, or license type. This is the official site to verify that a contractor's license is current and in good standing. If a contractor cannot provide a license number or does not appear in the database, do not hire them.

HVAC work in Miami must comply with the Florida Building Code. Ask your contractor whether a permit is required for your project—this depends on the scope of work. The contractor should understand local building-code requirements for your area and coordinate with Miami-Dade County Building Department if permits are needed. A reputable contractor will explain what code standards apply to your job before starting work.
