To verify a contractor's license in Florida, use the DBPR license search at myfloridalicense.com. You can search by the contractor's name or license number. This search confirms whether the license is current and active. The Construction Industry Licensing Board regulates all contractors in the state and maintains detailed records of licensure and disciplinary history.

Florida recognizes two main contractor license types: certified contractors, whose licenses begin with the letter C and allow work anywhere in the state, and registered contractors, whose licenses begin with R and limit work to the jurisdiction where they registered. Knowing the license type helps you understand whether a contractor can legally work in Miami-Dade County without additional local approval.

Most remodeling and new construction projects in Miami-Dade require permits and adherence to the Florida Building Code. Your contractor should handle permit applications and inspections. Ask whether the contractor will manage all code compliance and permitting or if you'll need to coordinate separately. Clarify upfront who covers permit costs and whether the timeline accounts for inspection schedules.
