In Florida, general contractors must be licensed by the Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB). The board regulates contractors who, for compensation, undertake construction, repair, alteration, remodeling, addition, demolition, or improvement of buildings or structures. License types include certified contractors (who may work anywhere in Florida) and registered contractors (who may work only in the jurisdiction where registered). You can verify any contractor's license status through the Florida DBPR license search portal at myfloridalicense.com.

Before hiring, ask the contractor about their license type and check their status online by name, license number, or city. Confirm whether they hold a certified (designation starting with 'C') or registered (designation starting with 'R') license, which affects where they can legally operate. Also ask about their workers' compensation coverage, which you can verify through the Construction Policy Tracking Database.

Most construction projects in Miami-Dade County require permits and must comply with the Florida Building Code. Ask your contractor how they handle permitting and whether they are familiar with local code requirements in your jurisdiction, as building code compliance is essential to avoid costly corrections.
