In Florida, HVAC contractors must hold a license issued by the Construction Industry Licensing Board under the Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR). The board oversees licensing and regulates the construction industry, including HVAC work. There are two main contractor types: certified contractors, whose licenses begin with the letter C and allow work in any Florida jurisdiction, and registered contractors, whose licenses begin with R and are limited to specific jurisdictions.

Before hiring, verify the contractor's license using the DBPR's online license search portal at myfloridalicense.com. You can search by the contractor's name, license number, or city. This confirms the license is active and in good standing. Check that the license type matches the work you need done.

When you contact an HVAC contractor, ask about their experience, the scope of work for your project, and whether a permit will be required. Florida's building codes apply to HVAC installations and modifications, so a qualified contractor will know local code requirements and obtain necessary permits.
